Viewing MKV Files
If you want to watch these videos on your computer, then you do not need to convert them to another format. Just download either VLC Media Player or MplayerOSX . Both applications can play MKV files as is. You can also install Perian, which will extend the functionalty of Quictime to allow it to play MKV videos
Unfortunately, these container files are not playable by many devices. For example, none of the Apple products like iPads, iPhones and Apple TV will play them. Neither will most DVD players and consoles like the Playstation 3. The exception is hardware that is DivX Plus HD certified. They will play these files if they have the proper codecs.
